Sussex announce financial surplus for 2009

Sussex County Cricket Club have announced a surplus in their accounts for the year to October 2009.

Income for the Hove-based side rose by 29% to a record £5.8 million, resulting in a surplus of £1,455.

Chairman of Sussex Jim May put it down to the side winning two one-day trophies as well as playing in the Champions League in India.

He said: "We regard the result as satisfactory in testing times for the economy given reduced interest rates."

May added: "The successes of the Sussex Sharks one-day side, which including winning the Twenty20 Cup and the NatWest Pro40 Division One, was a major factor in our achieving our impressive turnover figure."

May revealed that much of the income was due to higher gate receipts.

He told BBC Sussex: "An awful lot has come through the gate.

"The really good thing is we got nearly twice as much income in 2009 compared with 2008. That does show that when we're doing well we're getting more money through the gates."

Sussex were relegated to the second division of the County Championship but May is hopeful the club can recover.

He said: "We're looking very much to try and bounce back this year. We've made a couple of good new signings to strengthen the squad so it's really in our own hands."

Sussex recently started the first phase of the redevelopment of the County Ground in Hove after obtaining planning permission over the winter.

He added: "Since the year end we have spent £100,000 refurbishing our indoor school and we have secured several key players on longer-term contracts.

"I am confident that with our players, under the management of Mark Robinson and the captaincy of Mike Yardy, and the club's off the field activities being driven by Dave Brooks and his team, Sussex are well placed for the new season."
