Leg-spinner Will Beer signs new contract at Sussex

Sussex leg-spinner Will Beer has signed a new three-year contract which ties him to the county until 2012.

Crawley-born Beer, 21, has only made two appearances in first-class cricket but helped Sussex win the Twenty20 Cup and Pro40 one-day titles last summer.

He faces competition for his place next season after Sussex signed discarded England spinner Monty Panesar.

"I am very excited about the next three years at the club and continuing the club's recent success," he said.

"I want to build on my first year of first-team cricket and am really looking forward to working with Monty Panesar, using his experience as a spinner to drive my game forward."

The former England Under-19 international's best form last season came in the Twenty20 Cup, where he captured seven wickets at 33.42 apiece as Sussex qualified for the Champions League.

He was also a regular in the Friends Provident Trophy 50-over competition, although he was left out of the side for the final when Sussex lost to Hampshire at Lord's, denying them a domestic one-day treble.

Club coach Mark Davis added: "If his improvement last year is anything to go by, his development curve is moving in the right direction.

"Signing an extended contract will allow him the opportunity of developing into a match-winning leg-spinner."
