Mushtaq cleared for Sussex return

County champions Sussex have been given clearance for star spinner Musthaq Ahmed to play for them this season.

The 37-year-old has agreed to play in the rebel Indian Cricket League and Sussex were concerned that his county prospects would be placed in doubt.

But the club received a second No Objection Certificate which is required to fulfil England and Wales Cricket Board registration requirements.

"It has been a nervous wait and so we are now very happy," Sussex said.

Mushtaq has been an essential component of Sussex's recent success.

The wily bowler, who took 185 Test and 161 one-day international wickets for Pakistan between 1989 and 2003, has claimed 467 scalps in five seasons with the south coast side.

Sussex manager Mark Robinson was understandably delighted to retain the services of his most valuable wicket-taker.

"After weeks of waiting we are pleased this is all over and we can get on with finalising our preparations for the season and defence of our title, of which Mushy will obviously play a key role," he said.
