Surrey have signed young England wicketkeeper Steven Davies on a three-year contract from Worcestershire.

The 23-year-old told the club website: "Surrey are the biggest club in the country and I was flattered when they made a move to sign me.

"I am hugely excited about playing my part in the next era of Surrey county cricket," he added.

Davies made his international Twenty20 debut in May, and has also played for the England Lions and A teams.

He joins from Worcestershire, where he debuted above Graeme Hick in 2005, and topped 1,000 runs in 2006, a tally which included a first-class best of 192 against Glamorgan at the age of 19.

He is the first signing made by manager Chris Adams, who told the Surrey website: "We're looking to build a side capable of winning trophies for many years to come.

"Steven is exactly the kind of player who can help us do that."

Managing director Gus Mackay concluded: "The signing of Steven Davies underlines the direction we are moving the club in.

"He is an exciting, young, international player and will play a massive role in bringing long-term success to Surrey."
