Mohammad Akram and Scott Newman found some early season form but Surrey's match with Durham UCCC ended in a draw.
The students resumed on 115-3 and skipper James Morris moved on to 81, extending his partnership with Nicholas Lamb to 119, before Akram bowled him.
The 31-year-old Pakistan pace bowler was too sharp for most of the batsmen and finished with 6-40.
Surrey opted for more batting practice and Newman plundered 21 fours and four sixes in an unbeaten 144.
