Surrey plan Hollioake memorial
Flags at half-mst over the Oval
Surrey are to hold their own memorial service
Surrey are to create a lasting tribute to all-rounder Ben Hollioake, who died in a car crash last weekend at the age of only 24.

Hollioake's life is already set to be commemorated by the county in a memorial service, the date of which will be set this week.

However the Sunday Times reported that the Surrey authorities are also discussing plans to celebrate Hollioake's life in a more enduring way.

"We will be looking to create a memorial to Ben, maybe scholarships and something concrete at The Oval, perhaps the naming of a building as part of the ground redevelopment," chief executive Paul Sheldon said.

"Whichever way, the emphasis will be on youth development. From seven to 24, Ben was a product of Surrey."

Surrey are currently developing their youth academy, having applied to the England and Wales Cricket Board for academy status and expect a decision by September.

Sheldon admitted that the academy could be one way to provide a fitting tribute to Hollioake.

"The planned academy would certainly fit these categories.

"But these are early days and there are other options. Nothing will be done without the consent and involvement of Ben's family."

Sheldon confessed that the tragedy, the second to strike Surrey in recent years after the death of wicketkeeper Graham Kersey in 1997, had brought the club together.

"There is an amazing sense of unity among players and staff at Surrey.

"If anything good can come out of this, it is that atmosphere of togetherness and a desire to do Ben's memory justice."
