Gloucestershire pace bowler Steve Kirby has signed a three-year deal with West country rivals Somerset.

The 32-year-old ends his six-season spell at Gloucestershire after the county agreed to release him from the final two years of his contract.

Kirby revealed he wanted to leave Gloucestershire last week.

"I've got three or four years left in my career and I would love to achieve my dream of playing for England," he said at the time.

Somerset Director of Cricket Brian Rose told BBC Radio Bristol that Kirby's qualities suited Somerset's needs.

"Steve has the sort of aggression which helps a lot when you are bowling at nine, ten and jack," said Rose.

"Turning down a possible benefit at Gloucestershire to come here shows great spirit on his part. He wants to give himself every chance of playing for England, and by coming here that's what he hopes to do.

"Over the next two or three years we should be able to maintain a pretty competitive squad."
