All-rounder Arul Suppiah has said he wants to fill Ian Blackwell's spot in the Somerset first team following the spinner's move to Durham.

The 25-year-old right-hand bat and left-arm spinner saw his chances limited last season but is determined to grasp his opportunity.

Suppiah told the club website: "The door is open for somebody to claim a place in the first team.

"It's up to me to step up now and establish myself in the Somerset side."

He added: "I had a good feel last year in the first team games that I played so I am now looking to make that a permanent place for myself.

"This next season is a big one for me because I am coming to an age when I am maturing as a person and also I know what I want, so it would be good to take that spot and make it mine."

Somerset head coach Andy Hurry said: "Arul showed what he is capable of when he got his chance in the summer.

"He has now got his chance, so it's important now for the younger guys to stand up and become men."
