Veteran all-rounder Ian Stanger has been left out of Scotland's initial World Cup squad.

Scotland named a 15-man squad for the busy winter period leading up until the World Cup in the Caribbean in March and April next year.

The 34-year-old is one of eight named reserves and could still be included.

Head coach Peter Drinnen said: "Selection was not an easy process, with the last few places taking up some long discussions."

He added: "The nucleus of this squad has performed consistently for Scotland over the last couple of seasons and they fully deserve the opportunity to represent their country on the biggest stage in the world."

The selectors have informed the players that they reserve the right to make any changes they deem appropriate before announcing the final make-up of the squads at the beginning of next year.

Squad: John Blain, Dougie Brown, Gavin Hamilton, Majid Haq, Paul Hoffmann, Omer Hussain, Douglas Lockhart, Ross Lyons, Navdeep Poonia, Neil McCallum, Dewald Nel, Colin Smith, Ryan Watson (vice-captain), Fraser Watts, Craig Wright (captain).

Reserves: Asim Butt, Kyle Coetzer, Gordon Goudie, Gregor Maiden, Neil McRae, Qasim Sheikh, Simon Smith, Ian Stanger.
