Notts fume at Patel over omission

Nottinghamshire director of cricket Mick Newell has said all-rounder Samit Patel should be embarrassed about failing to improve his fitness.

Patel has been left out of both the one-day and Twenty20 England squads after failing to lose weight.

And Newell told BBC Radio Nottingham: "He was told once and he obviously hasn't taken enough notice, so he needs to take a lot of notice this time.

"It's embarrassing, from his point of view, to be left out twice for this."

Newell has insisted Notts are doing everything they can to help Patel.

"We're here to provide him support," he added. "He's got free membership to a gym, it's not difficult.

"We've got a full-time strength and conditioning coach, we've got the right sort of people. But ultimately he's the one that's got to get on the treadmill or push the weights."

Three Notts players - Ryan Sidebottom, Graeme Swann and Stuart Broad - were all named in both squads but Newell was not surprised to see Patel miss out.

"We've been in constant dialogue with the ECB since the end of Samit's trip to New Zealand," said Newell.

"He's been tested by us and re-tested by them and if he hasn't come up to standard then England are just sticking by what they said to him two months ago."

England's national selector Geoff Miller has told Patel he is wasting his undoubted talent.

"His fitness measurements have not improved since he was deselected and we want him to be disciplined in improving himself," said Miller.

"We know what he is capable of doing, we know what his technical abilities are, but players need to be fit and mentally tough.

"He has given an explanation. He feels he has been putting the work and the time in and the figures haven't changed. You can't argue with the figures.

"He is disappointed and he is hurt. I would be hurt as well if I couldn't take the chance to represent my country because I am unfit.

"I want him to discipline himself to get him up to the standard required to represent this country. I want to see him get the message and prove us wrong."
