Nottinghamshire opening bowler Charlie Shreck has been named the club's Player of the Year.

The 30-year-old received the award at the end-of-season gala dinner at Trent Bridge on Tuesday night.

Shreck took 76 wickets across four competitions for Notts in 2008, with 58 of those in the County Championship.

Notts also announced that captain and wicketkeeper Chris Read, who has been at the club for 11 years, has been awarded a benefit year in 2009.

"Being awarded a benefit year is a huge privilege," said the 30-year-old Read.

"Captaining Notts has been a challenging but brilliant experience and, after being part of the club for so long, I am looking forward to challenging for honours next season."

It has been a good season for the club, although we were disappointed to miss out on the County Championship

Charlie Shreck
Shreck was overjoyed at claiming the coveted player of the year award.

"It's an honour and a surprise to win the award because a few of my team-mates would have been considered worthy winners," he said.

"Mark Wagh scored 1,000 runs, Samit Patel has been exceptional, Darren Pattinson has done very well and Chris Read has proved to be an excellent captain.

"It has been a good season for the club and although we were disappointed to miss out on the County Championship in the final game of the season, we have finished second which is a great achievement."
