Chaminda Vaas claims Northants' top player award

Vaas will remain with Northants until the end of the 2012 season

Sri Lankan all-rounder Chaminda Vaas has been named as Northamptonshire's player of the year.

The 37-year-old left-arm seamer claimed 70 Championship wickets - more than anyone else has taken in a season for the county since 1995.

He also notched 403 runs, with a highest score of 96 as Northants narrowly missed out on promotion.

Batsman Alex Wakely, 22, received the Frank Rudd Trophy as the club's outstanding young cricketer.

There was also recognition of scorer Tony Kingston's long involvement with the county as he secured the clubman of the year accolade.

Awards for their performances in the Northants women's side went to Laura Tonks (batting), captain Trish Hankins (bowling) and Amy Gauvrit (most improved player).
