Northants captain Nicky Boje says his side were not at their best in the seven-wicket Twenty20 Cup semi-final defeat to Sussex at Edgbaston

After Northants were restricted to 136-6 from their 20 overs, Sussex got home with four balls to spare, with Murray Goodwin 80 not out.

"It's difficult to point fingers, but overall, we didn't play well," Boje told BBC Sport.

"It just looked like the spark wasn't there for us."

The South African added: "The way Murray played was fantastic. He kept them within touching distance all the way through and was the key to them winning.

"It's difficult when someone plays like that and takes the game away from you."

And, while acknowledging that Goodwin was the difference between the two sides, Boje admitted that his side did not get enough runs.

"We've been able to defend scores like that before, but we were perhaps 15 or 20 runs short," said the left-arm spinner.

We have enjoyed getting this far and now we'll have a couple of beers and enjoy the rest of the day

"We then couldn't get the momentum with our fielding to take a couple of wickets and put the pressure on them."

The semi-final defeat came less than 24 hours after Northants were bowled out for 90 by Kent to lose the County Championship Division Two match by 238 runs.

But coach David Capel said that result, and the fact that Sussex had an extra day's rest after completing their win over Worcestershire on Thursday, made no difference to the outcome at Edgbaston.

"I always say that it's how you perform on the day," said Capel.

"Our performance today has nothing to do with what happened yesterday and I certainly won't be using that as an excuse. I've got no regrets."

Their appearance in the last four marked Northants' best ever performance in the tournament, and Capel said that they can take pride from their cup run.

"Nicky Boje has done a great job with these young players and they can be proud of what they've achieved," said the former England all-rounder.

"We have enjoyed getting this far and now we'll have a couple of beers and enjoy the rest of the day."
