Northants head coach David Capel praised batsman Stephen Peters after Sunday's match-winning knock against Worcestershire in the Twenty20 Cup.

The ex-Worcester opener hit an unbeaten 61 off 52 balls in his first T20 outing of the season to see the Steelbacks home by seven wickets at Wantage Road.

"He's been part of the squad all the way through the competition," Capel told BBC Radio Northampton.

"And, for much of the time he's had to do 12th man duty, without complaint.

"But this was a game for him with Ian Harvey missing out through injury, and I was delighted to see him come in and do the job."

Since leaving Worcestershire at the end of 2005, Peters has, in fact, played just four Twenty20 Cup games for the Steelbacks - one for every season he has been at Wantage Road.

Northants' victory saw them secure top spot in the Midlands, West and Wales group - and with it a home tie against Hampshire in next month's quarter-finals.

"We've set our objectives and standards as a team," added Capel. "And it's very pleasing to see some of our younger players rise to them."
