New Middlesex skipper Neil Dexter has signed a three-year contract to remain at Lord's until 2013.

And fellow South African Gareth Berg has put pen to paper on a new extended deal that adds two more seasons to the two-year contract he signed in 2009.

Middlesex managing director Angus Fraser said: "Every county wants to keep hold of their best cricketers.

"Anyone who's played against us this season will realised that both Neil and Gareth are high quality cricketers."

Dexter, 25, replaces interim appointment Adam Gilchrist as Middlesex captain.

The Australian Test legend took over for the second half of the season following Shaun Udal's resignation earlier this month and has led his team to four Twenty20 wins in five matches.

The most encouraging thing is that Gareth is getting better all the time and there is still plenty more to come

But Fraser insists that Middlesex are still in good hands under Dexter.

"That Neil has been appointed captain for the second half of the season highlights how highly he is regarded by everyone at Middlesex," he said.

"He has been in excellent form with the bat and is one of the most elegant and classy players in the country.

"His bowling in one-day cricket is becoming highly effective too. Neil is a serious cricketer."

Fraser is also pleased to get 29-year-old Berg signed up.

"When I returned to Middlesex in February 2009, in many people's eyes the jury was out on Gareth Berg," he said.

"But over the past season and a half he has become one of the country's leading all-rounders.

"He holds a pivotal role in our side and when Gareth plays well we tend to.

"The most encouraging thing is that Gareth is getting better all the time and there is still plenty more to come."
