Leicestershire have announced a one-year contract extension for wicketkeeper-batsman Paul Nixon.

The 40-year-old, whose county career now spans four decades, scored 915 Championship runs last season.

"I am delighted to sign a new deal and I can honestly say that I am as excited now as when I started my professional career in 1987," said Nixon.

Chief executive Mike Siddall added: "Our supporters will be delighted that Paul will be with us again next year."

Nixon ended the season batting at number five but also had spells as opener and number three during the campaign.

I'd like to thank Leicestershire for their continued belief in me and everyone is already looking forward with relish

"After winning seven Championship games last season, we feel we can push on and are desperate to reach Division One status," added Nixon.

"We have a good squad here and the youngsters give us that freshness.

"It's important to have a nice balance of youth and experience and that's why I am pleased to sign on again.

"Everyone has been through a lot over the last few months but the players did their talking on the pitch as we put in a lot of good performances last season.

"We have lots of exciting talent coming through and it is great to be a part of that.

"I'd like to thank Leicestershire for their continued belief in me and everyone is already looking forward with relish."
