Matthew Hoggard focused on Leicestershire challenge

Leicestershire captain Matthew Hoggard says he has not given up all hope of an England recall but insists his main goal is bringing success to Grace Road.

Hoggard, 33, agreed a three-year deal with his new county in the summer and says that must be his main focus.

"I'm not doing this to get back in the England side. This is a new challenge," Hoggard told BBC Radio Leicester.

"I'd be lying to say I don't want to play for England. But I'm realistic and I think those days are gone."

The former England seam bowler left Yorkshire last summer after 15 years of service when talks over a new deal broke down.

Hoggard was a key member of the Ashes winning side of 2005 but has not featured at international level since playing in the first Test of the tour to New Zealand in 2008.

However he is not completely writing off his chances. "You never know," he added.

"It's a fantastic feeling putting on the Three Lions.

"We saw Martin Bicknell in the twilight of his career playing for England again so if I have a successful season, take loads of wicket and there are a few injuries about, who knows?"

"But I have done this as a new challenge to help Leicestershire produce a successful side. It's an exciting time to be part of the club."

And he hopes he will bring his both enthusiasm and endeavour to his new county side.

"Everybody knows that I do like to lark about and have fun and I think that's something you need when you have a long county season," Hoggard explained.

"But I'm also the guy that will bowl 25 overs and be switched on when the job's got to be done

"I want people to be able to do their job when it's time to do their job but you have to fun on the way because If you don't have fun you not enjoying it and if you're not enjoying it you won't do your best."
