Daren Powell makes early Lancashire exit

Former West Indies fast bowler Daren Powell has been released by Lancashire after being allowed to serve only the first half of a two-year contract.

The 32-year-old Jamaican was signed as a Kolpak player last winter on a two-year deal, turning his back on international cricket.

But he picked up only seven wickets in four Championship appearances at 49.00.

And he managed just seven wickets at 44.85 in nine appearances in the Clydesdale Bank 40.

Lancashire revealed on Friday night that Powell "had parted company with the club."

A statement read that he had "reached an amicable agreement with the club to end his contract a year early."

Powell, who won the first of his 37 Test caps in June 2002, had spent two previous spells in English county cricket with Derbyshire and Hampshire.

The Kolpak ruling allows players from countries with associate trade agreements with the European Union not to be classed as "overseas" players.
