Lancashire's Mike Watkinson explains Shoaib Malik move

Shoaib Malik
Mailk will be available for Lancashire's entire T20 campaign

Shaoib Malik's versatility is the reason Lancashire have signed him, says director of cricket Mike Watkinson.

The former Pakistan captain will arrive at Old Trafford ahead of their opening game of the FP t20 on 4 June.

Watkinson told BBC Radio Manchester: "I think his flexibility is the attraction for Twenty20 cricket.

"He has opened the batting. He can bat anywhere in the first six. He's an experienced spin bowler and so he'll be important to us in that regard."

He added: "As we've seen, wherever in the world the competitions are, there's a role for the spin bowler.

"What we've said time and time again is we don't want to bring inferior overseas players to the club who are going to just sit in the side and take the place of one of our own local players who could probably do the same job.

"If we bring in overseas players, in the main we want them to be players of quality who've got a pedigree who can bring something to the team.

"We want them to make us more effective in competitions but also just bring a bit of experience.

"We also look for something to inspire our younger players who are coming through our systems and perhaps sharing the same dressing-room as these lads."
