Kent have signed Sri Lankan leg-spinner Malinga Bandara as an overseas player for the second half of next season.

Bandara, 30, is due to arrive in mid to late May in time for the start of the revamped Twenty20 in June.

He will then take over from Australian Stuart Clark, Kent's overseas signing for the first half of 2010.

Bandara, who had half a summer with Gloucestershire in 2005, worked with Kent team director Paul Farbrace when he was assistant coach of Sri Lanka.

Farbrace said: "I'm absolutely delighted that such a high quality cricketer has chosen to join Kent.

"I'm thrilled at the prospect of him teaming up with James Tredwell and creating a high quality spin attack.

"Malinga is an experienced cricketer and will add great knowledge to our team, both on and off the field."

Bandara, who made the first of his eight Test appearances in 1998, has taken 391 first-class wickets at an average of 24.96.

He is also a useful lower-order batsman, with a first-class average of 19.97.
