Ireland are one win away from clinching a place in the ICC World Twenty20 after beating the United Arab Emirates by 22 runs in their latest qualifying match.

Victory over the Netherlands in Dubai on Saturday will guarantee the Irish a place in the West Indies.

Niall O'Brien's 46 helped Ireland post a score of 152-7 from their 20 overs.

The UAE were reduced to 17-3 and while Saqib Ali's 63 got the hosts back into the game, his dismissal by Alex Cusack put the Irish back in control.

The UAE face Afghanistan in Saturday's other Super Fours contest and the winners from the two games will be guaranteed places in the West Indies.

The two finalists from this competition will qualify for the ICC World Twenty20 proper in April and May, in the Caribbean - the scene of Irish cricket's finest hour in 2007 as they qualified for the Super Eight phase of the World Cup.

After winning the toss and opting to bat, Irish skipper William Porterfield and O'Brien put on 29 for the opening wicket.

There were also decent contributions down the order as Cusack, Trent Johnston, Kevin O'Brien and John Mooney all hit double figures before Gary Wilson added some late impetus with 19 from just seven deliveries.

The UAE slipped to 17-3, with Wilson holding on to two catches off Peter Connell deliveries.

Saqib Ali's 63 from 49 balls, which included five fours and two sixes, momentarily appeared to be the UAE on track for victory before he was seventh out with the score on 116.

The home effort ended with the first ball of the final over.

Cusack led the way with the ball for Ireland, taking three wickets for 19 runs, while Andre Botha joined Connell in taking two.

In the first match of the day, the Netherlands recovered from middle-order collapses to defeat Afghanistan by four wickets with seven balls to spare.

Chasing 129 for victory, the Dutch slipped from 64-0 to 74-3 in a space of 14 balls before recovering to 109-3 in 15 overs.

At that stage, the Netherlands lost three wickets in 12 balls for nine runs to slump to 118-6 which left them requiring 11 runs for victory from 18 balls.

However, Essex batsman Ryan ten Doeschate (24 no) took control of the proceedings and took the Dutch over the finish line.

Afghanistan threw away a blistering start after reaching 30-0 after four overs as they finished on 128-9.
