Hampshire have signed South Africa fast bowler Friedel de Wet for the forthcoming season.

The 30-year-old, who joins on a Kolpak deal, is currently playing for the Highveld Lions in the South African domestic league.

Their campaign finishes in April and he will be available for Hampshire's first game of the season against Durham.

Hampshire manager Giles White said: "Friedel comes highly recommended and with an excellent first class record."

De Wet said: "It has always been a dream of mine to play county cricket and I am therefore grateful for the opportunity Hampshire has given me.

"I feel the professional set up at Hampshire will allow me to further develop my game, and I look forward to joining my new team mates as well as the coaches and supporting staff for the upcoming 2011 season."

De Wet was signed by Middlesex in 2008 as a Kolpack player before earning a call-up to South Africa's Test squad in 2009.

He made his debut against England in December 2009 and went on to claim 4-55 in the first match of the series at Centurion.

But he picked up a stress fracture in his back in the third Test of that same series and fell out of national contention, but has remained in domestic cricket.
