Russell tips Gloucestershire's' Chris Dent for the top

Former Gloucestershire and England wicketkeeper Jack Russell says young batsman Chris Dent can make it to the very top of the game.

The 19-year-old scored 900 runs in all cricket this summer and has signed a contract at Gloucestershire until 2013.

Russell told BBC Bristol: "Denty can go all the way. The world's his oyster and he does everything.

"He's a dashing left-hander, he keeps wicket, he bowls left-arm spin and he's a brilliant fielder."

Russell spent over 23 years playing at Gloucestershire, before hanging up his gloves in 2004.

He now works as a wicketkeeping coach and is part of the executive board at the county.

"It's down to Denty as the opportunities will be there if he works hard enough," Russell added.

"He's a lovely lad. He gives the impression of being laid back but when push comes to shove he's in the thick of it."

Although Gloucestershire have lost several key senior players during the summer, Russell is upbeat about the future and the opportunity it gives to the likes of Dent.

"The great thing is I think he'll have to grow up and be a senior player quite quickly," he said.

"He'll have the opportunity to do that so his game is going to develop very fast and he's going to play a lot of cricket."
