Glos let wicketkeeper Adshead go

Gloucestershire have released first-choice wicketkeeper Steve Adshead after five years at Nevil Road.

The 29-year-old joined the county in 2004 as understudy to Jack Russell but took the gloves when the former England keeper retired.

Director of cricket John Bracewell said: "It is unfortunate to release Steve as he has performed very well for the first team this year.

"But we must continue to strengthen the squad at every opportunity."

He added: "We wish Steve every success and know that he will continue to prove to be a professional of the highest standard."

Adshead, who made a career-best 156 not out against Essex at Southend in August, had been linked with a return to Worcestershire, who he played for in 2003, as a replacement for Steven Davies, who has joined Surrey.

But Worcestershire director of cricket Steve Rhodes told BBC Hereford and Worcester that Adshead would not be back at New Road next season.

"He is a good player and a local lad, but where he is in his career I feel does not suit us," said Rhodes.

"We had a fine debut from Ben Cox, he did very well but he is still at school at the moment.

"The wicketkeeping position comes around very rarely and the timing of getting those gloves is crucial.

"I don't want to block his path and potentially at some stage there will be a chance for Ben, be it next year or the year after."
