Banerjee pens new Gloucs contract

Left-arm spinner Vikram Banerjee has signed a new two-year contract with Gloucestershire, keeping him at Nevil Road until the end of the 2010 season.

The new agreement replaces Banerjee's previous deal, which was due to expire at the end of the coming campaign.

The 24-year-old broke into the county's team at the end of the 2006 season and took 26 first-class wickets the following summer.

But he played only five Championship games last season, taking six wickets.

Chief executive Tom Richardson said: "We are demonstrating the faith we have in Vikram's ability.

"Our director of cricket, John Bracewell, has expressed an intention to play two spinners when conditions suit in the coming season so we expect Vikram to play an important role."

Bracewell added: "Vikram compliments the balance of our bowling attack.

"I'm really looking forward to working with him in conjunction with [Richard] Dawson and [Matthew] Gitsham, which gives us one of the most rounded spin bowling attacks in the country."
