Nigel Roberts rejoins Glamorgan days after quitting

Nigel Roberts
Roberts left Glamorgan on Tuesday but has changed his mind

Glamorgan vice-chairman Nigel Roberts has withdrawn his resignation from the troubled club after leaving on Tuesday.

A statement from Glamorgan said Roberts met officials on Friday where they all agreed to work together to raise more money for the club.

This is the latest in a short saga beginning in November when Glamorgan replaced Jamie Dalrymple as captain.

Roberts had become the fourth person to quit in less than a month after Alviro Petersen signed as skipper.

He followed president Peter Walker, director of cricket Matthew Maynard and Dalrymple who all resigned after South African Petersen was brought in.

Roberts' exit - and withdrawal as the club's main sponsor - had come at a summit of the club's committee on Tuesday.

"I put a proposal to the committee... they unanimously rejected my proposal and really left me with no position but to fall on my sword," he said at the time.

Roberts had wanted chairman Paul Russell to stand down at the club's AGM in March and make him chairman-elect. He had been unhappy at not being consulted over the changes being made at the club.

That proposition - in which Roberts claimed he would pay Russell £1.3m to cover part of unsecured loans with the club - was unanimously rejected by the committee.

In a news conference on Thursday evening, Russell maintained Roberts' plan would have "done nothing for the club, apart from create extra costs," and also said he was unhappy that Roberts had gone public with his proposals.

Late on Friday it appeared that some differences at least had been settled in a meeting between Russell, chief executive Alan Hamer, former chairman David Morgan and Roberts.

A statement from Hamer read: During the meeting, Messrs Russell, Roberts and Hamer, agreed to work to further the interests of Glamorgan Cricket and will combine together with the objective of producing additional investment into the club.

"During the course of the meeting, Mr Roberts agreed to withdraw his resignation as deputy chairman of Glamorgan Cricket and Mr Russell accepted the offer with immediate effect."
