Chairman Paul Russell refuses to quit Glamorgan

Chairman Paul Russell has refused to stand down from troubled Glamorgan.

Around 60 Glamorgan members had passed a vote of no confidence in Russell and the club committee during a protest meeting in Cardiff.

Vice-chairman Nigel Roberts became the fourth officer to exit the county after skipper Jamie Dalrymple was replaced.

Russell stated he would only resign if financially beneficial to the club and insisted: "I love being chairman and I'm proud of what we've achieved here."

In a news conference on Thursday, Russell also refused to be drawn on whether former Australian batsman and former Glamorgan overseas player Matthew Elliot was being lined up to succeed Matthew Maynard as cricket boss.

The turmoil began on 16 November, when Glamorgan announced they had replaced Jamie Dalrymple as captain and appointed new overseas signing Alviro Petersen as skipper.

Director of cricket Maynard then left Glamorgan alongside former skipper Jamie Dalyrmple and president Peter Walker with Roberts going in early December.

Roberts had wanted Russell to step aside at the club's AGM in March 2011 so he himself could take over as chairman-elect.

It would have been irresponsible of me to have remained as chairman if it had been to the financial detriment of the club

That proposition - in which Roberts claimed he would pay Russell £1.3m to cover part of unsecured loans with the club - was unanimously rejected by the committee.

Also, had the Glamorgan committee backed Roberts on Tuesday to succeed Russell, Maynard and Dalrymple would have returned to the club.

But responding publicly to his former vice-chairman's plans for the first time, Russell said: "It would have been irresponsible of me to have remained as chairman if it had been to the financial detriment of the club.

"But the major problem with the proposal was that it did nothing for the club, apart from create extra costs.

"The sum that Nigel Roberts mentioned would not have paid loans off in full by any means.

"It was also very short on detail."

Roberts also owns the club's main sponsor, Paramount Interiors, and is withdrawing sponsorship immediately.

However, Russell claimed that negotiations are ongoing for Glamorgan to see out the final year of the deal.

He also rejected claims that Glamorgan are in serious financial difficulty.

"The club, like most businesses, is suffering from the recession," he said.

"We are not a wealthy club, but we are in a stable financial position."

Russell was also unhappy that Roberts went public with his proposals.

"The committee regrets considerably that the confidentiality of committee affairs has been breached in this way," he said.

"Such a breach is unethical and damaging to Glamorgan cricket.

"Therefore it would be equally wrong for the committee to engage in a similar breach of confidentiality regarding these discussions."

Had Russell tendered his resignation, he would have become the fifth officer to have left the Swalec Stadium this winter.

After Dalrymple was replaced as skipper, Colin Metson was appointed as head of coaching staff.

With the former wicketkeeper and current committee member installed above him, director of cricket Maynard felt his position was untenable.

Glamorgan president Walker, a member of the county's cricket review group, followed, and tendered his resignation from the county just 36 hours after being unanimously reappointed president.

And Dalrymple also resigned from the club despite having a year left on his contract.

Glamorgan have released a statement to "thank Nigel for his contribution to the club" and "wish him well for the future."

The protest group need 300 members' signatures to force an Extraordinary General Meeting at Glamorgan, but it is believed that they have around 70.
