Coach Matthew Maynard signs new Glamorgan deal

Glamorgan coach Matthew Maynard has signed a new two-year deal with the county, as has captain Jamie Dalrymple.

Maynard, 43, came under fire last season from chairman Paul Russell after a disappointing one-day campaign.

They also finished fifth in Division Two in the County Championship losing and winning just twice, but had 56 batting points more than the rest.

"I am delighted to continue working with the team next season," said Maynard.

"We made headway last summer and I am delighted that Jamie Dalrymple will continue his role of club captain.

"Jamie is a tremendous leader and will undoubtedly play a key role in helping us achieve our goals next summer."

The announcement of the new contracts follow on from the end of a comprehensive review of the 2009 cricket season.

Russell admitted in September that Maynard's position could be under pressure, but gave him his personal backing.

Maynard took over at Glamorgan in 2007 but he has failed to improve their status as perennial strugglers.

Despite a crop of promising home-grown players - such as Maynard's own son Tom, Gareth Rees, James Harris and Ben Wright - and some astute recruiting, Glamorgan endured another lacklustre season in 2009.

That on-field disappointment contrasts sharply with the Welsh county's off-field progress, with the new Swalec Stadium delivering a first Ashes Test and annual profits being made.

"Last season showed that we have become more difficult to beat in four-day cricket and from a poor start, our performances in one-day cricket improved at the back end of the season," said Dalrymple, who joined Glamorgan in 2008.

"We still have some way to go, but I am confident that we now have the right team in place to help us reach our goals next year."

Russell added: "Over the past few weeks, we have spent a considerable amount of time reviewing the club's cricket function.

"Jamie and Matthew both have the full support of the club's executive and committee. I am looking forward to what promises to be an exciting 2010."
