Glamorgan points penalty reduced on appeal

Glamorgan's two-point deduction carried forward from last season's one-day Friends Provident Trophy has been reduced on appeal.

The one remaining penalty point will be deducted in the new Clydesdale Bank 40, with Glamorgan beginning their campaign on Sunday at home to Somerset.

The Welsh county have been punished for a poor Swalec Stadium pitch in their defeat to Essex last May.

Glamorgan chief Alan Hamer said: "This is good news for Glamorgan."

Glamorgan had originally decided not to appeal to the England & Wales Cricket Board but revisited that decision to have their penalty halved.

"Common sense has been applied and the reduction in the penalty now provides us with an opportunity to compete with the other teams in our qualifying group.," Hamer added.

"The club accepts the reduced penalty and I would like to express my thanks to the ECB for handling this matter in a very positive and constructive way.

"We are now focussing on Sunday's Clydesdale Bank 40 match... and this news will give the team added confidence before they take on the Somerset Sabres."

Pitch panel liaison officers Mike Denness and Tony Pigott ruled that the level of turn for Essex's seven-wicket win in the FP Trophy last season was "excessive".

Essex's Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria finished with 4-16 from his 10 overs in that match, ripping through Glamorgan's middle order.
