Glamorgan jettison captain Hemp

Bermuda international Hemp debuted for Glamorgan in 1991

Glamorgan have released captain David Hemp.

Hemp was out of contract at the end of this season and Glamorgan have opted not to offer him another deal.

The 37-year-old averaged 34.68 with the bat this season in all competitions, amassing 763 runs in a rain-hit year.

Hemp made his Glamorgan debut in 1991 and had a spell with Warwickshire from 1997 to 2001 before returning, taking over the captaincy from Robert Croft at the end of the 2006 season.

Although Hemp has lived most of his life in Wales he is an international for Bermuda, the country of his birth.

He played his last game for Glamorgan in the County Championship Division Two game at former side Warwickshire last week, which the Dragons lost by 179 runs.

Another Glamorgan batsman - 24-year-old Richard Grant - is also out of contract and will move on, having been given permission to talk to other clubs.

Definitely remaining at the Swalec Stadium are young seamer James Harris and wicketkeeper Mark Wallace, who have both agreed new deals until 2011.

Wallace has been voted the One-Day Player of the Year, while Jamie Dalrymple is the Players' Player of the Year.

Other players signed up to 2010 include Gareth Rees - who amassed 1,000 runs for the first time in his career in 2008 - Tom Maynard, the Young Player of the Year, and Ben Wright.

In addition, Glamorgan have also extended the contracts of Huw Waters, Ryan Watkins and Mike O'Shea.

Former England bowler Steve Watkin will now take up position as bowling coach for both the 1st and 2nd XIs, in addition to that of the junior squads.

Adrian Shaw has also been appointed to the position of 2nd XI coach.

Glamorgan cricket manager Matthew Maynard said: "I am absolutely delighted to have some really key players signed up for the next few years.

"It is vitally important to ensure that we maintain the focus on developing the younger generation of players.

"With the necessary funds in place, I am looking forward to finalising the squad for next season."
