Jones commits future to Glamorgan

England fast bowler Simon Jones has signed a new three-year deal with Glamorgan to stay at Sophia Gardens.

The 26-year-old had been targeted by Surrey and Hampshire after saying a lack of one-day opportunities had hindered his career progress.

But after positive talks with county officials last week, Jones pledged his future to the Welsh side on Thursday.

The Swansea paceman impressed on the winter Test tour of South Africa, taking 15 wickets at 26.66.

He is currently paid by England as he is on a central contract and is almost certain to be included in the national plans this summer.

Glamorgan chief executive Mike Fatkin said: "We're naturally delighted that Simon has committed himself to Glamorgan for the next three years.

"In addition to his high profile within the international game and his undoubted match-winning ability, he is also perhaps the classic illustration of everything we're trying to do at the club in terms of developing home-grown players.

"His progress acts as a real role model for other younger players coming through.

"There has been a fair degree of speculation over whether Simon would commit himself to the club, but our discussions have been nothing but positive and he has always indicated his desire to remain here in Wales.

"We're pleased that Simon sees his future with us and that he believes he can fulfil his potential with us. It's great news."
