Gooch was appointed England batting coach in November
Essex batting coach Graham Gooch has called on the club's players to show more belief in their four-day game performances next season.
Two wins out of 16 in the last campaign saw Essex relegated back into Division Two of the County Championship.
Gooch told BBC Essex: "We need to have a better season in the four-day cricket next year.
"Our one-day cricket was good but we need to regain that confidence and make a challenge to bounce straight back."
Former batsman Gooch was recently named England's batting coach for the 2010 Ashes series in Australia.
And despite overcoming Pakistan 3-1 in a four-match Test series this summer Gooch says the national side will have to improve on their performances if they're to hold on to the tiny urn.
They've still got some very talented cricketers. They will be ready for the Ashes, there's no doubt about that
Graham Gooch on Australia
"We had a great summer in 2010 but we need to raise the bar probably in Australia. It's the ultimate test for an English cricketer," he said.
"Our batting will have to be stronger than it has been this summer in terms of volume of runs. It's a big challenge but I think a challenge the team are ready to meet.
"To prove yourself a quality side, you have to win all around the world."
Despite England starting the Ashes as the higher ranked Test team - England are fourth, Australia fifth - Gooch is predicting a tough winter tour ahead.
"They're in a rebuilding period, every side goes through that," he added.
"But they've still got some very talented cricketers. They will be ready for the Ashes, there's no doubt about that."
