New Zealand all-rounder Scott Styris is set to make his debut for Essex in their Twenty20 match with Surrey at The Oval on Thursday.

Styris will stay at Chelmsford for their group games and will extend his deal should they progress.

"Graham Gooch called me during the World Twenty20 to see if I wanted to join," he told BBC Essex.

"I've been in this Twenty20 competition before and it is a lot of fun I really enjoy it."

He added: "Any opportunity to come back and be part of it is great."

The 34-year-old, who was part of New Zealand's recent World Twenty20 team, has enjoyed spells in the English game with both Middlesex and Durham.

"England has a lot to say in world cricket and people want to see the best players over here," he said.

"It's a version of the game that is going from strength to strength and it's the way of the world these days for players to move around the world and play in competitions and try and win them."
