Essex cricket club record six-figure loss for 2009

Essex County Cricket Club has recorded a loss of £216,000 for 2009, with advertising and sponsorship being blamed for the deficit.

However, the club confirmed membership was up and it attracted high attendances for its Twenty20 matches.

Treasurer Keith Brown said: "Cricket is not immune from the recession and this impacted our corporate income.

"But if we do well in various competitions, both the team and the club will benefit from prize money."

Essex chairman Nigel Hilliard added: "Promotion achieved one of our objectives for 2009 and it was pleasing to see our home grown players make an impact on the international stage.

"Financially the club has had a difficult year, importantly there were no surprises in the accounts.

"While 2010 is fiscally challenging, several revenue streams are increasing and our costs are under control."
