Essex coach rues Twenty20 defeat

Paul Grayson
Grayson is hopeful of signing a new overseas player

Essex coach Paul Grayson has admitted his side are not used to the feeling of missing out on a place in the quarter-finals of the Twenty20 Cup.

A six-wicket defeat by Hampshire in Chelmsford on Sunday ensured the Eagles finished fourth in the group.

Grayson told BBC Essex: "It's really disappointing, because we're used to qualifying from this competition.

"We can't sit around and feel sorry for ourselves because there's so much cricket to play for."

The Essex coach is still hopeful of signing a replacement overseas player in time for the next County Championship match against Glamorgan, which starts on 7 July.

Spin bowler Danish Kaneria has left to play for Pakistan in their tour of Sri Lanka.

Grayson added: "With overseas players it's very difficult to get them work visas, so we're just waiting for one to come through at the moment for this player.

"Hopefully, something will happen very soon and the overseas player will be here for the Glamorgan game."
