Durham batsman Kyle Coetzer has committed himself to the club by signing a one-year contract extension.

The Scotsman has signed a new deal at The Riverside following a promising season last year which saw him average 38 in the County Championship.

He also played a major part in the club's Friends Provident final victory against Hampshire at Lord's, in which he scored 61.

Coetzer, 23, says he now wants to cement his place in the first team.

He has recently spent two weeks in Mumbai working on his batting skills as he looks to build on the 1,300 runs he scored last season.

He told BBC Radio Newcastle: "I felt during last season I got out a couple of times when I should not have done against spin bowling.

"I also felt I was lacking in ideas sometimes in the one-day format, so I went to the Academy in Mumbai where I spent 10 days batting against their spinners."

Coetzer joined the Durham Academy after impressing in trials while still at school in Aberdeen. His father used to drive him to Chester-le-Street so he could train with the rest of the squad. He officially joined the set-up in 2004 and captained Scotland's Under-19s.

Now he is preparing for the 2008 season as Durham hope to build on a year in which they won two pieces of silverware, the Friends Provident Trophy and the Pro-40 Division Two title, while finishing second in the Championship.

"My target this year is not only to hold down a regular place in the first team, but to contribute more too," said Coetzer. "I want to score more hundreds and contribute to the whole effort of the team, not just hope to hold down a place in it."
