Hinds played 45 Tests for West Indies before joining Derbyshire

Derbyshire have released batsman Wavell Hinds and leg-spinner Mark Lawson.

West Indies international Hinds, 33, has spent two seasons at the County Ground, while Lawson, 23, joined from Yorkshire at the beginning of 2009.

Head of cricket John Morris said: "Wavell has added some international class to our batting.

"However, with our young batsmen coming through and the Kolpak penalties to be taken into account, we have decided to look at different options for 2010."

Morris added: "Mark has given his all for the cause in 2009 and he is a talented bowler who performed well for us at times.

"However, his opportunities to play first-team cricket became few and far between during the second half of the campaign and, again, we have elected to explore different options ahead of next season."

Hinds two seasons with Derbyshire brought him 1248 first-class runs at an average of 33.72, including two centuries.

Lawson took six wickets at an average of 83.25 in his four first-class games.

The "Kolpak" name comes from the Slovakian handball player Maros Kolpak, who won a ruling in the European Court of Justice in 2004 allowing him to play professionally in Germany without being classed as a foreigner.

The term has been tagged on to cricketers from South Africa and the West Indies, who were able to come into the UK and play county cricket without being classed as overseas players.

But last year the European Commission changed its interpretation on a key employment agreement - the Cotonou Treaty - which meant it should not be regarded as free movement of labour and instead focus on the free trade of goods and services.
