Shreck celebrates the wicket of Hampshire batsman Myburgh
Nottinghamshire launched the defence of their County Championship title by bowling Hampshire out for 218 on day one at Trent Bridge. Hampshire were going along serenely at 104-1 just before lunch but three wickets in three balls turned the tide. Charlie Shreck, who claimed two of those scalps, finished with 4-51 on his return from a loan spell at Kent, with Andre Adams taking 5-54. Nottinghamshire reached 6-0 in reply before bad light forced an early close. After being put into bat, Hampshire could have hardly asked for a better start as Jimmy Adams (45) and Liam Dawson (37) put on a promising 91 for the first wicket as too few deliveries troubled the openers. Nottinghamshire finally broke through when Jimmy Adams hooked Andre Adams to Luke Fletcher at long leg, and Shreck's return for a brief spell from the Radcliffe Road End just before lunch proved the catalyst to a dramatic clatter of wickets. Shreck had Johannes Myburgh caught behind off the fifth ball of his final over before the interval, and followed it up with a swinging delivery that Neil McKenzie edged to gully. Off the first ball of the following over, Adams trapped Dawson leg before to leave the visitors 104-4. James Vince survived Shreck's hat-trick ball, although wickets continued to fall as the Cornishman bowled Nic Pothas and Adams trapped Vince lbw with an off-cutter. Hampshire captain Dominic Cork resisted and top-scored with a feisty 48 before becoming another lbw victim for Adams, who followed it up by having Sean Ervine held at extra cover. Fletcher bowled Danny Briggs four balls after tea and Shreck wrapped up the innings when David Griffiths prodded to first slip.
BBC Radio 5 live's Kevin Howells gives his view: "Hampshire's attack will be frustrated by coming off for bad light, which on top of their batting collapse around lunchtime, was another case of missed opportunity. "Hampshire captain Dominic Cork says he would have batted anyway but clearly Notts felt there would be swing for them, and there was, but it wasn't hurting the visitors. "Jimmy Adams and Liam Dawson had done a good job to see through the first 90 mins or so. Then Andre Adams put the batsmen under a bit more pressure and finally it paid off. "Another half an hour and the confidence would have been under scrutiny for the home side. It's a very early but a clear signal that the champions have got the bowling to cope without Ryan Sidebottom as long as they have the batting to come out on top in tricky conditions at Trent Bridge. More clues to follow on the second day." BBC Radio Nottingham's cricket correspondent Dave Bracegirdle on day one at Trent Bridge: "Picking up where he left off last season, Andre Adams again proved his value as a key component in Notts' four-pronged seam attack. "Once he'd dismissed his dangerous namesake Jimmy Adams and broken the opening stand of 91, the former Kiwi international tore the heart out of the visitors' middle order to pick up a first day five-for. "Charlie Shreck, who played on loan for Kent last week, offered terrific support with four wickets of his own as the champions ended the first day of their defence on top."
