COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE, Taunton:
CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY ONE: Somerset 423-6
Somerset 5pts, Notts 2pts
Hildreth faced 187 balls for his 142, hitting 18 fours
James Hildreth hit a century as Somerset's batsmen dominated day one against Nottinghamshire at Taunton.
Somerset lost captain Marcus Trescothick to Darren Pattinson (4-68) from the first ball of the match in slipping to 126-4.
But Hildreth (142) combined with Jos Buttler (88) for a fifth-wicket stand of 210 to put the hosts on top.
Craig Kieswetter (43 not out) and Peter Trego (36 not out) then took the hosts to 423-6 at the close.
Notts suffered a blow before play when Ryan Sidebottom suffered a knee injury in a warm-up game of football and had to pull out.
But after Pattinson disturbed Trescothick's leg stump, the visitors took further advantage of helpful conditions to remove Nick Compton and Arul Suppiah.
Zander de Bruyn (44) and Hildreth took the score to 126-3 at lunch only for De Bruyn to be trapped lbw by Pattinson with the first ball after the break.
From then on Hildreth, who moved his Championship tally for the season to 846 runs, and Buttler took control and had moved the score to 336 in the evening session when Buttler danced down the pitch to Samit Patel and was bowled.
Hildreth then fell to the second new ball, carelessly pulling Pattinson to square leg, to leave Kieswetter and Trego to take Somerset to the close with an unbroken stand of 76.
