Nottinghamshire pair Stuart Broad and Andre Adams took three wickets apiece as Warwickshire were bowled out for 313 on day one at Edgbaston.
Adams (3-35) had the best figures, but Broad's 3-79 included the wicket of England team-mate Jonathan Trott (21).

Neil Carter was left stranded on 99 from 123 balls for Warwickshire before the visitors ended the day on 18-0.
The hosts had been struggling before Carter's arrival to the crease, having slumped to 157-7.
Carter hit five sixes and 10 fours as he recorded 72 of the 113 runs made from his last two partnerships with Imran Tahir and Boyd Rankin.
But he was denied his second career century when Rankin was run out backing up to end Warwickshire's first innings.
