An astonishing onslaught by ex-England opener Marcus Trescothick saw Somerset to a six-wicket victory over Hampshire.

Hampshire's 216-5 was the highest Twenty20 total by a visiting team at Taunton, Neil McKenzie hitting 73 in 48 balls, while Sean Ervine made 53.

But Trescothick then hit the fastest half century in eight years of domestic Twenty20 cricket, in just 13 balls, hitting seven sixes in a quickfire 78.

Peter Trego hit 72 not out as Somerset won on 220-4 with 12 balls to spare.

Only one batsman, Yuvraj Singh, has ever scored a faster half century in world Twenty20 cricket, when he hit 58 off 12 balls against England at Durban in September 2007.

Trescothick and Trego, promoted to open on his return from England Lions duty, put on 116 in just 8.1 overs.

Danny Briggs (2-32) finally got rid of Trescothick before removing Kieron Pollard for a duck in the same over.

But his team-mate Abdul Razzaq came in for some serious tap, going for 64 off his four overs.

Earlier, after the loss of Michael Carberry, who was brilliantly run out by Trescothick's direct hit from cover in the first over, Hampshire batted aggressively, James Vince scoring 22 off nine balls.

Ervine and McKenzie then added 112 in 11 overs as Hampshire scored their highest Twenty20 score away from The Rose Bowl this season.

Somerset captain Marcus Trescothick told BBC Radio Bristol:
"There was no time to assess what's going on. You've got to go from pretty soon in the first over.

"It came off, it was one of those days that you go for it and it happens and it's been my day.

"It's come right in the last couple of games and they've been important victories, especially chasing today. I'm delighted."

Hampshire captain Dominic Cork told BBC Radio Solent:
"We are obviously bitterly disappointed.

"You have seen an outstanding display of batting from a very talented man.

"When you are an England supporter like I am, it's a disappointment that Marcus Trescothick isn't playing for England.

"I don't think we kept our discipline and didn't execute our plans. Sometimes that happens in Twenty20 but it is no excuse.

"We take our hats off to Somerset. They were the better side and they deserved to win."
