Anthony Ireland
Ireland ended day one with impressive figures of 5-25

Anthony Ireland claimed five wickets as Gloucestershire bowled Middlesex out for 236 on day one at Nevil Road.

The visitors were rescued from 97-5 by Josh Davey, who hit 61 on his County Championship debut before being caught by James Franklin off Jon Lewis.

Gloucestershire closed on 81-2 in reply, giving them the chance to build a decent advantage on day two.

But Middlesex will take heart from Pedro Collins' bowling display, the paceman taking 2-25 off 10 overs.

Davey was helped by fellow debutant Toby Roland-Jones (19), with the pair putting on a ninth-wicket partnership of 53.

Roland-Jones's brief spell at the crease was ended as he miscued a pull to give Ireland his final wicket of the day.

Gloucestershire skipper Alex Gidman's decision to field first looked to be backfiring on him as Middlesex pair Sam Robson and Scott Newman raced to an opening wicket stand of 63.

But the momentum dramatically switched within the hour before lunch as the hosts claimed 5-34 in 11 overs.
