Adam Lyth celebrates his century against Lancashire at Old Trafford

Adam Lyth hit his third County Championship century of the summer as Yorkshire seized control on day one of the Roses match against Lancashire.

Lyth was out for exactly 100 after dominating an opening stand of 166 with Jacques Rudolph (83).

Anthony McGrath also weighed in with 61 and Jonathan Bairstow 47 as Yorkshire piled on the runs at Old Trafford.

But Glen Chapple finished with 4-60 as the hosts fought back with six wickets after tea, Yorkshire closing on 379-8.

That total at stumps would have been a disappointment to the Tykes, without captain Andrew Gale to England Lions duty and the ill Joe Sayers, having been 299-2 early in the final session.

Chapple was the chief destroyer, taking his wickets in the space of 26 balls, while Tom Smith and Daren Powell both finished with two scalps apiece.

But if the final session belonged to Lancashire, the opening two were claimed by Yorkshire, as Lyth raced out of the blocks to reach 50 for the ninth time this season off 47 balls.

His second 50 to bring up his century, which included 17 boundaries, took a little longer, but after reaching three figures, Lyth was out two balls later to Smith.

Rudolph was a little more pedestrian in comparison, reaching his own half-century off 94 balls, before he edged Powell to Smith at second slip.

McGrath and Bairstow put on 79 for the third wicket before Chapple took centre stage, trapping Gerard Brophy leg before, having Adil Rashid brilliantly caught at point by Steven Croft and Azeem Rafiq caught behind before claiming Tino Best caught and bowled.

BBC Sport's Scott Read reflects on day one of the Roses match:
"Six wickets after tea should help the Lancashire bowlers sleep a little easier tonight as the Red rallied on day one.

"The previous two sessions were completely dominated by Yorkshire and the scoreboard made tough reading for Lancashire - even the view from the plush new stand 'The Point' - which was opened to county cricket fans for the first time - told the same story that Yorkshire were well in charge.

"Lancashire had to endure a long and hot day in the field but still had the resolve to keep going and fight back, and a word too for Steven Croft who took a magnificent catch to add to his growing list.

"So Lancashire will return in the morning hoping to polish off the Yorkshire tail for less than 400."
