Essex maintained their chance of a place in the FP t20 quarter-finals with a comfortable 66-run win over Gloucestershire at Nevil Road.

Matt Walker top scored with 66, supported by 41 in 21 balls from Scott Styris as Essex piled up 184-4.

Gloucestershire then slumped to 118 all out, only Chris Taylor (32) and Chris Dent (31) putting up any resistance.

The home side remain rock bottom of the South Group, having won just two of their eight games, but Essex go third.

It was a third straight win for Essex under James Foster since skipper Mark Pettini stood down.

Having been bowled out for just 68 in their previous game against Hampshire, the home side were never in the hunt after experimental opener Jon Lewis fell for a duck in the opening over.

That was the first of two wickets for Styris, who was matches by Chris Wright and Danish Kaneria.

Gloucestershire director of cricket John Bracewell told BBC Gloucestershire:

"We have to start finding the winning way and that's what we're exploring at the moment before the scarring of losing gets a little too deep.

"I think we bowled poorly to outfields then you end up behind the rate. We're used to bowling more as a pack.

"That's part of the emotional issue of losing. Guys are trying too hard to get wickets as opposed to trying to get teams behind the scoreboard and applying pressure that way."

Essex coach Paul Grayson told BBC Essex:
"I'm really pleased with our last two performances, very professional and very ruthless.

"I think Matt Walker's been in good nick for couple of weeks batting at three, it was nice for him to make a good score.

"He's a good player of spin and that's one of the reasons why we put him up the order."
