Leicestershire failed by ten runs to chase down a challenging Northants total in a rain-shortened FP t20 match.

A half-century from Chaminda Vaas, an unbeaten 54 from Nicky Boje and a rapid 29 from Andrew Hall were the highlights of Northants' 166-4 in 18 overs.

Jack Brooks then quickly dismissed Leicestershire dangermen Jacques du Toit and Brad Hodge.

But Will Jefferson (53), James Taylor (38) and James Benning (21no) kept them in it, only to fall short on 156-6.

It was the Steelbacks' third win in a row, and they owed much to the all-round ability of Vaas.

Promoted to open as a pinch-hitter, the Sri Lankan responded with a half-century off 35 balls that included eight sweetly-struck boundaries.

Boje then made 54 off 30 balls, with nine fours and a six, and Hall gave him fine support, scoring 29 off 18 balls, hitting a six plus four other boundaries.

For much of the time, the Foxes were well up with the rate, with Jefferson and Taylor giving them real hope of their first win at home in the competition this season by sharing a partnership of 72 in nine overs for the third wicket.

Taylor looked in fine form before pulling a full toss off the bowling of David Willey to square leg. The all-important wicket of Jefferson was claimed by Vaas, who trapped him lbw as he tried to work the ball to leg.

The Foxes needed 16 off the final over for victory, but Hall made sure they got nowhere near it, conceding just five runs and taking the wicket of Wayne White with his final delivery to give Northants a win by ten runs.

Northamptonshire Steelbacks captain Andrew Hall told BBC Radio Northampton:
"The guys batted really well. We got ourselves set up with good partnerships.

"Nicky Boje was timing it sweetly and it was good to be out there with him when he's batting that well.

"We always seem to defend well, then a couple of good overs put the pressure on Leicetershire and we managed to get a couple of wickets at the right times."

BBC Radio Northampton's Richard Savage gives his verdict:
"The Steelbacks are certainly into their stride now in this year's T20.

"The last three games they've defended a total, and defended it marvellously. The frailty in the batting didn't resurface and two left-handed veterans knocked immaculate fifties to set up the defence.

"The Foxes were ahead of the rate for much of their reply, but what's encouraging was the Steelbacks' strength under pressure. This is more like the Northants of 2009."
