Hampshire were denied the chance of victory over Essex by rain on the final afternoon at The Rose Bowl.

After being set 328 to win, Essex were soon in trouble at 16-4, thanks in part to two wickets from David Balcome.

Ravi Bopara (61) and James Foster then steadied the ship before both fell to leave the visitors staring defeat in the face at 99-6.

However, the weather intervened with 24 overs remaining and the Essex escape was confirmed just after 1730 BST.

Hampshire began the day 235-6 and were put in a strong position by a seventh-wicket stand of 97 between captain Nic Pothas (59) and veteran all-rounder Dominic Cork (41 not out).

Essex may have been entertaining thoughts of victory when Pothas's declaration set them a tempting target, but they would have quickly disappeared after a terrible start.

Opener Tom Westley was bowled by James Tomlinson for one in the second over and in the next Cork knocked back Jaik Mickleburgh's off stump.

Essex slumped further when Balcombe persuaded Matt Walker to edge to the slips and then had Ryan ten Doeschate lbw before Bopara and Foster, who was dropped on seven, halted the Hampshire charge with a fifth-wicket stand of 65.

When Bopara was trapped in front by spinner Danny Briggs and Foster succumbed to Sean Ervine, Essex were firmly in the mire but were saved by the arrival of the rain.
