Jimmy Adams upstaged Kevin Pietersen with his maiden Twenty20 century as Hampshire beat Surrey by 10 runs.

Pietersen, making his first county appearance for more than two years, was out for only 15, but saw Adams make an unbeaten 101 off 65 balls.

And he shared an unbroken 144 with Sean Ervine (54no) as Hampshire made 201-2.

Young seamer Chris Wood then took 3-30 as Surrey fell short of their target on 191-9, despite the best efforts of Mark Ramprakash, who made 61.

It was only the fourth time in Twenty20 cricket that Hampshire have passed 200 and their victory enabled them to climb to fourth in the Friends Provident t20 South Group table.

Surrey, who won their first game at Somerset on Saturday, remain bottom.

Pietersen hit three fours in an over off former Hampshire team-mate Chris Tremlett to announce his arrival at the Rose Bowl but was then caught at long-off driving Chris Schofield to Matt Spriegel.

That left Adams to take centre stage, although he did enjoy a slice of good fortune in getting to his century as he was caught at long-on off a no-ball on 99.

Hampshire's Jimmy Adams told BBC Radio Solent:
"I think as a batting unit we had been a bit low on runs in this competition, but it was a nice wicket and we managed to get a score that proved just enough.

"It was a short boundary and a good wicket and hopefully that can set us up for the rest of the competition.

"We have been pretty disappointed as a batting group and the bowlers have been superb and we managed to return the favour."

BBC Radio Solent's Kevan James:
"At last Hampshire showed everybody what they could do with the bat, with Jimmy Adams scoring his maiden hundred in the competition.

"There's no doubt that having Kevin Pietersen in the side for the first time in two years gave the squad a lift that was needed after Friday's disappointment against Somerset."
