Derbyshire's Wes Durston's ton in vain as Notts win

Ferocious striking from Alex Hales and Samit Patel fired Nottinghamshire top of the North Group table with a five-wicket victory over Derbyshire.

Derbyshire new boy Wes Durston's county Twenty20 record 111 off 59 balls helped the visitors to a competitive 192-6.

But Notts' response was explosive, Hales hitting a quickfire 69 off 25 balls, including 14 boundaries, as they won on 193-5 with three overs to spare.

Patel (62) scored the winning runs, striking 10 boundaries along the way.

Ali Brown (32) also offered staunch support as Derbyshire's bowlers toiled, Steffan Jones being smashed for 53 off three overs.

But skipper Greg Smith took 3-34, removing Brown, David Hussey and Steven Mullaney.

Durston, released by Somerset last September, signed for Derbyshire two weeks ago, just two days after hitting 111 in 68 balls for the Unicorns in the CB40 against Sussex.

Notts' second straight win takes them top of the group on run rate, in a five-way tie on four points, but the men from Trent Bridge are the only ones yet to lose a game.

Nottinghamshire's Alex Hales told BBC Radio Nottingham:

"I just went out there with a clear mind and backed myself to hit the boundaries. Fortunately, it paid off today.

"All credit to our bowlers in the final five overs. I'm pleased we got the win.

"You have to trust your instinct. If it pays off, it looks brilliant. If not, well, there's always the next game."
