Captain Pettini helps rescue Essex at Trent Bridge

LV COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE, Trent Bridge:

Nottinghamshire endured a testing final half hour as they lost two wickets in reply to Essex's 329 all out.

David Masters produced a fine opening spell to remove Alex Hales and nightwatchman Darren Pattinson as the home side stumbled to 33-2.

Earlier, skipper Mark Pettini fell four runs short of a century on 96 having rescued Essex from a precarious 118-5.

Pettini was the last Essex man to fall as Steven Mullaney doubled his previous tally of first-class wickets with 4-31.

The Essex skipper's innings was the standout contribution of the day but he will have been frustrated to miss out on what would have been his first Championship century in 11 months.

He finally fell after four hours at the crease, attempting to hit Mullaney to the boundary.

Nottinghamshire began the day hoping for early wickets and got them when Darren Pattinson trapped Matt Walker lbw and Ravi Bopara went in a similar fashion to Ryan Sidebottom.

But James Foster (59) and Pettini offered sterner resistance to alter the course of the game.

Mullaney's four wickets prevented the Essex tail from heaping further frustration on Nottinghamshire.

But any relief was shortlived as first Hales prodded a slower ball back to Masters before Pattinson edged to Walker at second slip.
