COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE, The Rose Bowl: Durham 439 and 8-0 drew with Hampshire 384 (Durham 11pts, Hants 10pts)
Relegation-threatened Hampshire are still not clear of safety, despite 10 points from drawing their rain-affected game with county champions Durham. Hands were shaken just after tea, with Durham on 8-0 second time around, after bowling out for Hampshire for 384. The teams then came off for bad light, but the game was already over as a contest once Hants saved the follow-on. Durham spinner Ian Blackwell took three of the four morning wickets to fall, to finish with figures of 5-110. It was Blackwell's third five-wicket haul of the season, taking his season's Championship haul to 41. Steve Harmison, Durham's leading wicket-taker, claimed the day's other scalp to reach 50 Championship wickets for the season.

While Hampshire now sweat on the result from Hove between Division One's two main relegation rivals Sussex and Yorkshire, the draw ended Durham's hopes of equalling the wins record in the modern-day, two-tier County Championship. Hampshire went into the final day needing another 22 runs to avoid the follow-on at a precarious 267-6 - but experienced duo Nic Pothas and Sean Ervine made sure there were no further alarms, putting on 78 for the seventh wicket. And they also helped their team to four batting bonus points, finishing just 16 short of a fifth. Durham captain Will Smith persisted with spinners Blackwell and debutant Scott Borthwick, who got through 27 overs for a final analysis of 3-95.
